Background Feature Safe Passage: When you need to, you can secure free passage on a sailing ship for yourself and your adventuring companions. You might sail on the ship you served on, or another ship you have good relations with (perhaps one captained by a former crewmate). Because you’re calling in a favor, you can’t be certain of a schedule or route that will meet your every need. Your DM will determine how long it takes to get where you need to go. In return for your free passage, you and your companions are expected to assist the crew during the voyage.

Gundark’s early life was as spent as a slave. He was owned by a group of Calimshan merchants that specialized in providing the rich and powerful with exotic servants and bodyguards. When he was old enough, Gundark was sold to one of the Sultans of Calimport, and served as a palace guard for several years.
One fateful day, a man arrived at the palace. Unlike everyone else that generally looked away and hurried past upon seeing Gundark, this man actually struck up a conversation with him while waiting to speak to the Sultan. Gundark learned that he was a well known privateer captain who had successfully completed a vital task for the Sultan. Rysal Amon yn Khalid saw something in Gundark, and requested him as part of the payment for a job well done. Suddenly Gundark found himself heading to a new life as a sailor.
He loved it. From the first moment at sea he knew it called to him. His new home, The Typhoon, was also very different from anything he had known. The crew worked together with uncanny skill, sailing the ship as one entity with Rysal Amon at the helm. It was so different than the trudging labors of slaves. The crew worked hard because they wanted to. Before long Gundark was doing the same.
Rysal Amon was not just a collector of exotic crewmen. He kept a collection of wonders from across Faerun that Gundark would get to see from time to time. One object in particular caught his attention. A massive hammer ornately designed as a bulls head, made from a material he had never seen before.
A few months later, the Typhoon found itself in a nasty fight with a couple of pirate ships. This was the first time Gundark let his fury loose. In his rage he saved the Rysal’s life, and the next day he was asked to speak with him.
The Rysal had an offer for the minotaur. He would release Gundark from his bonds of slavery, and give him ‘Cannonball’, the weapon in his collection. Rysal Amon felt that it was meant for him. In return, he asked Gundark to pledge himself to the Rysal of his own free will, and act as his bodyguard ‘until fate decides to carry you to different shores’. Gundark agreed immediately, and served on the ship for years.
Gundark befriended another member of the ship during his service. The ships magic user was another unique character, an old Chult Shaman with great ability to speak to and command the waves. Gundark learned from her the power of Nature and how to commune with it. He was very suprised to find out that the Sea spoke to him as well.
He left the ship because a giant floating castle showed up over the ship at sea, and an actual GIANT told him that he was needed. The Rysal was greatly amused.
